CiNEFiLE have just released a classic movie called The Wages Of Fear, a.k.a Le salaire de la peur. The movie is in French and has a pretty good score on IMDb, making it #140 in the top 250. Directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot, starring Yves Montand, and based on a 1950 novel by Georges Arnaud. When a South American oil well owned by an American company catches fire, the company hires four European men, down on their luck, to drive two trucks over mountain dirt roads, while carrying the nitroglycerine needed to extinguish the fire. Sorcerer (1977), directed by William Friedkin, is the American remake.
A convoy of trucks driven by four derelicts transports dangerous nitroglycerin to try and quell an oil well fire. Their long, harrowing ride over bad roads with their cargo ready to explode at every jolt and jar; the drivers are gambling with their very lives against the opportunity to escape from their steaming, sordid environment. Remade in 1977 by William Friedkin (following “The Exorcist,”) as “Sorcerer.”
